One last post to show you the finished bull's eye quilt top. I'm pretty happy with it, and Nancy seemed to think it was ok. I look forward to doing another one using a more sophisticated idea.

Thanks for your attention. See you next time around.

I worked on my bull's eye project all day today. I got six of the quarter circles done. Tomorrow I should be able to finish the other four and start putting it together. I've been going in early in the  morning around 7 and leaving after dinner around 7. 12 hours is enough for me.

I think I'd like to try this exercise again using an actual color scheme. I'm going to have lots to do when I get home.

Also note the pink circle on the right. We learned how to do set in circles with a sewing machine. It came out perfect and wasn't even hard.

I spent the day working on my bull's eye project. Nancy seems to think my design is ok, but I'm not all that thrilled with it. But I'm moving forward with it for lack of a better idea. I didn't like the way the "rays" were intersecting in the corners, so I opted to replace the corners with little quarter circles that will combine with other blocks to make secondary circles.

Only two workdays left, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday is packing up and then final review in the afternoon.

New project today. We were assigned to make a composition starting with 4 bull's eyes, then add patterning. There are many fabulous examples of  how this can be done, but I haven't found a way that works for me yet.

I tried dividing the quarter circles radially, but I don't think that really works. I'll try something else tomorrow and let you know.

I worked all afternoon from 1 - 6, but I don't have much to show for it. I modified and refined my shapes and made up some small required pieces.

The challenge now is to arrange the fragments in a fresh and dynamic way and have them float on either a light or a dark background. I chose the dark background. What constitutes a fresh and dynamic arrangement is a mystery to me. I just tried to create some lines that will help with putting it all together.

I'm going in early tomorrow and work on it another couple of hours. Then at 9 o'clock it'll be time to put it away and start another project.

We had the day off today. I mostly stayed in my room resting, reading and watching television. During the mid day I went to a nearby park and hiked for an hour or so. The weather was beautiful, as was the landscape. The air was crisp. It was totally refreshing.

Tomorrow the studio opens at 1 o'clock and I'll be there for the afternoon working on my shapes. Wish me luck!

So the new assignment is to make 10 "fragments" to be used later in a full composition. The fragments are to consist of a figure on a background. There are some color restrictions. I spent half Thursday afternoon and all of Friday morning (about 6 hours) and made these:

When Nancy came around about lunch time, she declared that my shapes were boring and that I should make some more. The rest of the day was spent making these:

Verdict on these was that the shapes were ok, but the colors were boring. She's being tough on me, and of course once she states her criticism I can see that she' right. It's pushing me to get more mentally nimble. Not feeling discouraged.

Now we get Saturday and Sunday morning off. We'll be back at work Sunday afternoon.

Not much to report today. I worked all day on the piece I started yesterday and got it done about 8 this evening.

Designing with lines alone is harder than it sounds. There are some problems with this piece and I haven't heard the final verdict. Seems to me that the placement of the lines in some cases is arbitrary.

But it does fulfill most of the criteria we were given -- light on dark on one side, dark on light on the other. Use of glowing and flat colors. Fine lines on the left and chunky lines on the right, delineation of recognizable shapes.

I'm the only one in the class that finished, but there are a few others who will  probably get theirs done by the deadline at 9 tomorrow morning. Most didn't come close to finishing. I don't know if I get points for that, but I like that I'm not leaving a lot of unfinished business.

Ok. Exhausting work today, but I am making good progress. The assignment we got this morning was to create a composition using lines and linear shapes and in one color family. One section of the quilt must be light on dark, and use fine lines. The other section is dark on light and uses big chunky lines.

Here's my array of colors. I chose green because I had the most values.

Here's my progression throughout the day.

There were other requirements like the lines are supposed to be broken and some stuff about flat and glowing colors. The piecing is devilishly hard. This completed section took me about 7 hours. More of the same scheduled for tomorrow. The deadline is Thursday morning at 9.

Busy first day. Here's a picture of the barn interior and one of my work space.

The assignment for today was to make dynamic designs using only lines. The first five use one line, and the second five use two lines. We were supposed to pay special attention to the shapes that make up the background. I don't know if mine are dynamic enough. I'm just glad I got them all done.

 Hi,

I arrived this afternoon (Sunday) in good shape. I like my hotel room. It looks out at the woods in the back. Not a very good picture, but you get the idea.

I've been to the barn and set up my stuff. We had a nice dinner of salmon with capers and a salad. We got all the information we need to get started tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. I'm excited.
